The Maid System — Complete Guide

Overview

The Six Elemental Maidens of Domestic Perfection are the cleaning team of the Rose & Thorn — six trained specialists whose combined work keeps the brothel's cleanliness rating up, which directly caps daily income and reputation gains. They are not workers — they don't earn income, don't take clients, and run on an entirely separate progression system from the worker management track.
Each of the first 5 Maids is bound to one sacred element (Air, Fire, Earth, Spirit, Water) and trained in her own school of "Elemental Domestic Perfection" — a legendary, completely obscure prophecy that nobody else in the realm has heard of. Each maid was told by her master that one day she would find The Prismatic Master, a person of cosmic destiny who would unite all five elements under one roof. They each grew up convinced this would happen. Then they all show up at your brothel, realize you've gathered them all, and begin to suspect the prophecy might actually be real.
The reality is that the prophecy isn't about "saving the world through service." It's about five lonely, hyper-specialized experts finally finding peers who understand their dedication, sisters who challenge them, and a master who values them equally. The "Perfect Harmony" they were told about is just five exceptional people working together with someone who treats them with respect.
It is later revealed that there may actually be a 6th Maid, and the first 5 will be eagerly waiting for her to join the team.
This guide covers the mechanics of the maid system. For each maid's individual personality, recruitment, and dialogue, see her dedicated character guide.

The Six Maids

The six maids together cover the entire 24-hour cycle in 4-hour blocks. Each works alone during her shift, and no more than one maid staffs the brothel at a time. The order you acquire them doesn't matter (except for Onyx). The Maids' Quarters (Specialty Room) levels up automatically: its level equals the number of acquired maids + the number of apprentices, and adds to the daily upkeep.
# Element Maid Working Hours Catchphrase
1 💜 Air Violet 6 AM – 10 AM "Darling, life itself is theater!"
2 🧡 Fire Mandarin 10 AM – 2 PM "Talk is cheap. Watch."
3 💗 Earth Lychee 2 PM – 6 PM "Ooh, that's so pretty!"
4 💚 Spirit Lime 6 PM – 10 PM "The spirits whisper of..."
5 💙 Water Rain 10 PM – 2 AM "According to my calculations..."
6 🖤 Darkness Onyx 2 AM – 6 AM "The darkness is insubordinate."

How to Acquire Each Maid

The first 5 maids have their own recruitment path. None are automatic; none have prerequisites on the others. You can recruit them in any order. Onyx can only be recruited last (see details below).

Violet — "The Standing Ovation"

  • Where: Bards Guild
  • Requires: Bards Guild faction reputation 50+
  • Violet is a struggling theatrical performer who can't quite catch her break. After supporting her enough at the Bards Guild to earn 50 faction reputation, the "Standing Ovation" plot fires — you attend her latest performance and stand to applaud. Moved to tears, she joins the brothel as Maid #1 (Air).

Mandarin — Dungeon Rescue

  • Where: Dungeon scenario (Greater Demon encounter)
  • Requires: Dungeon exploration + combat capability
  • During a dungeon scenario, you encounter Mandarin cleaning. A Greater Demon will appear, claiming he owns her. Defeat the demon, and impressed by your strength, she offers her services as Maid #2 (Fire).

Lychee — Romantic Recruitment

  • Where: Around town (NPC)
  • Requires: Crush stage in her relationship arc
  • Lychee is an NPC you meet around town and build a relationship with through regular visits. She's beautiful, fashion-obsessed, and quickly identifies you as worth her attention. Once you reach Crush stage with her, a dialogue option appears to invite her to the brothel — accept, and she joins as Maid #3 (Earth).

Lime — Wizard Initiation Test Reward

  • Where: Wizard Tower (Gandon)
  • Requires: Complete the Wizard Initiation Test. For Gandon to have the option to initiate the test, you'll need him at Acquaintance+, Blinky (brothel rep 7+) at Known+, and 50+ Wizard Guild clout. If you fail the test, you can try it again the next day.
  • Lime is the recruitment reward for completing the Wizard Initiation Test at the Arcane Shop. Pass (or even just complete) the test, and she joins as Maid #4 (Spirit). She's been waiting at the Arcane Shop, sensing "cosmic energies" for some time, and the test outcome is the sign.

Rain — Back Alleys Search Encounter

  • Where: Back Alleys (search encounter)
  • Requires: Researching skill (engagement choice during the encounter)
  • Rain is found in the Back Alleys — an analytical researcher documenting the city's underbelly with a notebook and lens. The encounter offers multiple choices: the Researching skill choice resonates most with her, and she accepts a brothel invitation to continue her fieldwork. She joins as Maid #5 (Water).

Onyx — The Last Maid

  • Prerequisite: Having acquired all the other maids and triggered the plot "Whispers of Six" (requires all 5 maids at Close Friend+, auto-triggers in the Maids' Quarters (8 AM — 8 PM))
  • Where: Dungeon (scenarii)
  • Requires: Encountering her 5 times in different areas of the dungeon
  • Onyx is first found in the Epic Depths (floors 46-50). You will then need to find her 4 more times in a specific order to be able to recruit her:
  1. In the Overgrowth Depths (floors 31-36)
  2. In the Mechanical Depths (floors 41-45)
  3. In the Flooded floor (floor 13)
  4. In the Void Depths (floors 36-40), where she will finally agree to join your establishment. She joins as Maid #6 (Darkness)
To see more details about each maid, click on their name in the table above to access their walkthrough (only Onyx doesn't have one yet).
The bottlenecks: Bards Guild faction rep 50 (Violet), Crush stage romance (Lychee), and the Wizard Initiation Test (Lime) are the three slowest gates. Mandarin (combat) and Rain (Researching skill) are usually faster to unlock.
Obviously, since she requires all 5 maids to be unlocked, Onyx will be the hardest to get.

Maid Levels & Experience

Each maid levels independently from 1 to 6 (MAX). Levels gate her cleaning power and how many items she can equip.
Level Experience to Reach Base Cleaning Equipment Slots
1 0 10 1
2 200 15 1
3 600 20 1
4 1,200 25 2
5 3,500 30 2
6 (MAX) 7,000 40 2
A new maid joins at Level 1 with 0 experience. She gains experience passively from each workday. Items can boost her experience gain rate (one-maid or all-maids EXP percentage bonuses). The big jump from Level 3 to Level 4 unlocks the second equipment slot: that's when the maid stops being "okay" and starts being a real cleaning powerhouse. Push every maid to Level 4 before chasing Level 5/6.

Maid Equipment & Items

The Maids Management Screen

The Maids Management screen is accessed from the Maids Quarters: "Manage Maids". The top section lists all your acquired maids, and selecting one of them lets you review their level, cleaning stat, and currently equipped items in the middle section. The bottom section of the screen contains your maid's item inventory. Maids can equip items in their slots (1 slot at level 3 or less, 2 slots at level 4+). Items grant a wide variety of bonuses, from simple flat cleaning boosts to brothel-wide income and reputation bonuses, mess reduction, EXP rate increases, and more. Each item is unique, meaning that once equipped, it's locked to that maid until unequipped. Most items can be acquired/purchased multiple times, while some are obtained only once. Maid-specific signature items (from the Epic tier) only fit their named maid. To equip an item, choose one in the inventory section, then select an empty maid's slot.

Silken Moth Cloth +10 Cleaning (one), −10% Mess Moth Lady plot reward (complete the Silk Blessing questline)
The first 5 Epic Signature Items are the standout reward of pursuing the Kupie Love Training achievements. Each maid's signature item is uniquely tuned to her — Violet's boosts performance and reputation, Mandarin's stacks raw power and mess reduction, Lychee's builds team variance and cleaning, Lime's spreads EXP across the entire team, and Rain's improves apprentice EXP and mess reduction. The 6th one, Onyx's Mourning Veil, is a plot reward from Chrysalia and improves cleaning, mess reduction, and the brothel's wealth. Together, all six turn the cleaning team into a brothel-wide engine for income and reputation.

Unlocking access to Chrysalia

Unlocking access to Chrysalia to obtain Onyx's Mourning Veil is no small feat. I'll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, but to unlock access to her location, you will need:
  • Story Beat 74 completed
  • Terra's plot's "The First Unmeasured Plot" completed
  • Zodiac's plot's "The Necessary Evil" completed
  • All 3 previous caterpillar reward plots completed, which should already be done before you reach the last requirement
  • A total caterpillar population over or equal at 1 000 000 000
After you've fulfilled all those conditions, you'll auto-trigger a plot in the Whispering Woods (Present Era, Uptown), which will unlock access to Chrysalia and her questline.

How Cleanliness Works (Why Maids Matter)

Maids exist to keep brothel cleanliness high. Cleanliness is a 0–100 score with 8 tiers, and it directly caps both daily income and daily reputation gain. Here's the multiplier table:
Cleanliness Tier Income Cap Reputation Multiplier
0–4 Revolting 0% (workers earn nothing) 0% (no rep at all)
5–14 Filthy 25% floor 25%
15–29 Dirty 50% floor 50%
30–44 Messy 75% floor 75%
45–59 Acceptable 100% baseline 100%
60–74 Clean 120% ceiling 120%
75–89 Very Clean 140% ceiling 140%
90–100 Spotless 160% ceiling 160%
A worker earning $100/day at Acceptable will earn $160/day at Spotless — and your reputation grows 60% faster. Cleanliness is one of the highest-leverage stats in the entire game.

Daily Mess Generation

Each day, the brothel generates mess based on:
  • Number of active workers (more workers = more mess)
  • Worker activity (high-client days = more mess)
  • Other factors (event-based mess, room upgrades, etc.)
Maids reduce that mess each day during their shifts. The total cleaning power of all six maids (their level + items + bonuses) is subtracted from daily mess. If maid output exceeds mess, cleanliness rises.

The Maid Cleaning Math

A maid's daily cleaning contribution: her base cleaning is multiplied by her percentage bonuses, then her flat bonuses are added on top.
For the brothel total: all individual maid outputs are summed, multiplied by any all-maids percentage bonuses, then all-maids flat bonuses are added.
Single-maid item effects only boost their wearer; all-maids effects boost the team total.

Cleaning Variance

Each day's actual cleaning has natural variance — the same maid setup doesn't always produce the same daily output. Cleaning Variance bonus items reduce that randomness, making your daily cleaning output more predictable. At low levels with few items, expect noisy daily output; at high levels with variance items equipped, output is steady.

Apprentice Bonus

Workers assigned as Maids' Quarters apprentices add +10 cleaning per apprentice to the team total. This stacks with maid items and is the single fastest way to push cleaning above mess once you have multiple workers — assigning 3 spare workers to the Maids' Quarters adds +30 cleaning daily for free.

How Maids Gain Experience

Each maid gains experience daily based on:
  • Days worked (passive base EXP)
  • Maid EXP item bonuses (single-maid items multiply only her EXP; all-maid items multiply everyone's)
  • All Maids EXP bonus (Lime's Burning Passion epic item gives +20% to all maids)
The EXP bonuses multiply together: the maid's base EXP is boosted by her own EXP-item percentage, and then again by any all-maids EXP percentage.
Stack Cleaning Manual Vol. 2 (+20% one), Mastery Guidebook (+35% one), and Lime's Burning Passion (+20% all) on a single maid for ~+85% effective EXP rate.

Power-Leveling One Maid

If you want to push a specific maid to Level 6 fast:
  1. Equip her with Mastery Guidebook (+35% EXP)
  2. Equip her second slot with Cleaning Manual Vol. 2 (+20% EXP) once she reaches Level 4
  3. If you have Lime's Burning Passion equipped on Lime, the +20% all-maids EXP stacks
  4. Total effective EXP rate: ~+85%

Maid Quarters Room Level

The Maids' Quarters room is one of the few brothel locations that levels automatically; it doesn't use Wealth/Materials/Fabrics/Ingredients like workers' rooms. Its level is the sum of the number of acquired maids and the number of apprentices.
Acquired Maids Maids' Quarters Level
0 (room not built)
1 Level 1
2 Level 2
3 Level 3
4 Level 4
5 Level 5
6 Level 6

Cross-Maid Plot Chains

Once you have multiple maids, the system runs auto-trigger plots between them — moments where the maids interact, argue, debate, and gradually become a sisterhood. These auto-fire when conditions are met:
Plot Maids Conditions
Violet + Mandarin Shift Change Violet, Mandarin During shift transition (10 AM)
Lime + Lychee Elements Lychee, Lime Acquaintance+ with both
Lime + Rain Analysis Lime, Rain Acquaintance+ with both
Lime + Mandarin Protection Mandarin, Lime Acquaintance+ with both
Lime Meets Blinky Lime + Blinky Arcane Room, Lime Acquaintance+
Three Maidens First Meeting Mandarin, Lychee, Rain All three acquired
Lime + Lychee Elemental Sisters Lychee, Lime Friend+ with both
Maids Compete Bedroom Mandarin, Lychee, Lime Friend+ with all three, Master Bedroom
Whispers of Six All five Close Friend+ with all five — hints at a sixth maid concept
The plot chain reflects the three-phase sisterhood arc:
  1. Skeptical Rivalry — early plots have the maids comparing methods, arguing whose element is best
  2. Grudging Respect — middle plots show them acknowledging each other's skill
  3. United Sisterhood — late plots have them coordinating, supporting one another
The "Whispers of Six" plot at all-five Close Friend+ stage hints at a future expansion (a sixth Void Maid concept that exists in narrative documents).

The Prophecy of the Prismatic Master

Each maid believes in the same obscure prophecy — passed down only through the closed network of Elemental Service masters:
When chaos threatens all the realms,
And darkness seeks to overwhelm,
Five Maidens blessed with Elemental grace
Shall find their Master in a sacred place...
The prophecy claims that when all five Maidens serve The Prismatic Master together, they will achieve "Perfect Harmony of Service" — a mystical state where their combined elemental energies create absolute perfection, peace, and beauty.
The reality: Nobody else in the realm has ever heard of this prophecy. It's a private teaching from each of their five different masters. The player has NO idea this prophecy exists until the maids start acting strange about it.
The cosmic joke: The prophecy isn't actually about saving the world through service. It's about five lonely, hyper-specialized experts finally finding each other and a master who treats them well. The "Perfect Harmony" turns out to be just five exceptional people working together for someone who values them. That's the real miracle.
The player gradually realizes through dialogue:
  • Violet declares them The Master with theatrical flair
  • Mandarin accepts after seeing them defeat the demon
  • Lychee is convinced because they appreciate beauty and gave her gifts
  • Lime senses cosmic energy around them (and blushes a lot)
  • Rain documents the statistical anomaly that her predictions fail around the player
By the time all five are recruited, they're each privately convinced you're The Prismatic Master — and the competition for your favor begins.

Phase 1: Get Your First Maid

  • Cleaning tanks fast in an unattended brothel — get a maid as soon as possible
  • Mandarin (Dungeon) and Rain (Back Alleys) are usually fastest
  • Violet if you've been building Bards Guild rep already
  • A single maid covers only 4 hours of the day; mess accumulates the rest

Phase 2: Build to Level 4 on Your First Maid

  • Level 4 unlocks her second equipment slot — the biggest power spike in the system
  • Equip her with Sturdy Broom ($300) and Cleaning Manual Vol. 1 ($400) early
  • Push her to Level 3 (600 EXP) for the Maid Mentor tutorial reward (Master Mop, Rare tier)

Phase 3: Acquire Maids 2 and 3

  • Aim for full daytime coverage first (Violet, Mandarin, Lychee — 6 AM to 6 PM)
  • Each new maid expands the dialogue and unlocks cross-maid plots
  • Build cleanliness multipliers to push past Acceptable (100%) toward Clean (120%)

Phase 4: Acquire Maids 4 and 5

  • Lime (Wizard Initiation Test) and Rain (Back Alleys) round out 24-hour coverage
  • "Three Maidens First Meeting" auto-triggers when Mandarin/Lychee/Rain all join
  • Whispers of Six plot at all-five Close Friend+

Phase 5: Equip the first 5 Maids Epic Signature Items

  • Pursue Kupie Love Training achievements for the first 5 maid-specific Epic items
  • Each maid's signature item is uniquely tuned to her strengths
  • Fully kitted out, the team should push cleanliness to Spotless (160% income/rep cap)

Phase 6: Apprentice Workers to the Maids' Quarters

  • Assign 3 workers to the Maids' Quarters → +30 cleaning daily for free
  • Combined with maxed maids and full epic items, you stay Spotless permanently

Phase 7: Build Relationships

  • Daily visits to maids unlock dialogue, plots, and the cross-maid chain
  • Push to Close Friend+ with all five for the "Whispers of Six" capstone
  • The maids' three-phase sisterhood arc plays out in their plots

Phase 8: Acquire Maid 6

  • Trigger Whispers of Six
  • Encounter her 5 times in the dungeon
  • Pursue her signature item: unlock Chrysalia, then complete "The Mourning Veil" (auto-trigger plot, requires Onyx recruited and Chrysalia at Friend+). You should get to Friend level with Chrysalia pretty fast, since her intro plot (the first time you actually visit her) gives a huge relationship boost. The real difficulty comes from actually unlocking her.

Tips & Optimal Play

  • The first maid is critical — without one, cleanliness collapses fast and your income/reputation cap drops to floor levels.
  • Level 4 is the power-spike level — second equipment slot dramatically increases what each maid contributes. Push past Level 3 ASAP.
  • Apprenticing workers to the Maids' Quarters is free cleaning (+10 per apprentice, max 3 = +30 daily). Use it.
  • Maid-specific Epic items only fit their named maid — Mandarin's Iron Will doesn't fit on Violet. The Perfection Pendant is the one Epic item any maid can wear.
  • Cleaning Variance items reduce daily randomness, especially valuable when you need predictable cleanliness levels for events (like Royal Delegation, which gates at Cleanliness 75+).
  • Mess Reduction is more efficient than raw cleaning at scale — every −1 mess per day is permanent; every +1 cleaning is a one-day output. Late game, mess reduction items dominate.
  • Lime's Burning Passion is the team multiplier — +20% EXP for all maids stacks on every maid simultaneously. Lime should be a Kupie achievement priority.
  • The Bards Guild reputation 50 gate is the slowest — start building Bards Guild rep early if you want Violet.
  • Don't ignore Lime's shy personality — she's the only maid with a major personality overhaul (heavy whispering, hesitant speech, lots of "fidgets"). Players sometimes overlook her quiet content.
  • Cross-character integration: Lime has a special plot meeting Blinky in the Arcane Room. Several maid plots intersect with brothel management plots (Esperanza tour, Elara recruitment).
  • The "Whispers of Six" plot teases a future addition: a Void Maid. She's actually a Darkness Maid and is now recruitable in the current build (9.7b).
  • Recruiting Onyx: Having triggered The "Whispers of Six" plot, pursue Onyx and her Maid-specific Epic item.
