Caterpillar Rearing - Complete System Guide
The Caterpillar Rearing system is a long-term breeding ecosystem that spans the Medieval and Present eras. Players collect wild caterpillars from clickable spawns scattered across nearly every map, release them into the wild, and let populations grow through a real lifecycle simulation. Large populations unlock crystal rewards, special items, mystical breeding bonuses, silk for fabric crafting, and Marina's premium fishing bait.
This guide covers everything: how to find caterpillars, how the breeding lifecycle works, the research system, all 70 species, every spawn location with weighted probabilities, the reward thresholds, and integration with fishing and silk crafting.

Quick Start

To start collecting caterpillars you need nothing — they appear as clickable wiggling sprites on maps automatically. To start breeding them, you need to visit either the Whispering Woods Uptown (Present) or the Whispering Woods (Medieval) and use the Manage Caterpillar Breeding action.
The first time you visit Whispering Woods Uptown (Present), Seraph auto-triggers a tutorial plot ("The Butterfly Effect") explaining the system.
The loop:
  1. Walk around any map — clickable caterpillar sprites spawn at certain hours.
  2. Click them to add to your collection.
  3. Visit either Whispering Woods location.
  4. Use the breeding action to open the Habitat screen.
  5. Press the "Add All" button to release every collected caterpillar to its appropriate era.
  6. Wait. Caterpillars mature, breed, and populate the ecosystem over in-game days.

Story Introduction

The tutorial plot "The Butterfly Effect" auto-fires the first time you enter Whispering Woods Uptown (Present), one time only. Awards +5 Seraph relationship.
Seraph greets you and explains that small actions can have large consequences across time. Raising butterflies and moths in the Present and Medieval eras helps restore the future — VOID's toxic influence on the Future-era forest can be reversed by sustaining large enough populations across the past and present.
Seraph covers:
  • Caterpillars produce silk for crafting and fish bait when populations get high
  • Use the Manage Caterpillar Breeding action at this location to oversee everything
  • Medieval populations provide mystical benefits to Present-era breeding
  • Researching caterpillar biology improves survival, breeding success, and lifespan
The plot ends with three response choices (polite / practical / enthusiastic) — flavor only, no mechanical difference.

Acquisition Methods

There are four ways to get new caterpillars into your collection: map discovery, hiking, tutorial rewards and research milestones.

1. Clickable Discovery (primary method)

Caterpillars appear as wiggling clickable sprites on world maps. Each location defines its own species pool with weighted probabilities — a location only spawns species in its pool. Click the sprite to add the caterpillar to your collection. Triggers a respawn cooldown (2–10 days) before another caterpillar can appear at that location.

2. Hiking & Special Discovery actions

Two actions work differently from clickable spawns:
  • Hike Mountains (Present-era, at Mountains Uptown)
  • Climb Mountain (Medieval-era, at Mountain Foothills)
These don't roll from a single location pool. Instead they pull from the union of every species in every pool of the player's current era, and pick one with equal probability.
This means every species that exists in any pool of the current era has the same chance of being found via hiking, including rare and epic species with low weights at ordinary spawn locations. No prior discovery of the contributing locations is required; hiking uses their era-prefixed pools directly.
The action displays a unique popup with flavor text about hiking the trail and finding a caterpillar. No respawn cooldown like clickable spawns — you can keep performing the action as often as the action's energy/time/daily-limit constraints allow.
Key implication: species not in any pool of an era cannot be obtained via hiking either. The pool is the gate.

3. Tutorial Quest Rewards

Some tutorial quests grant a specific species and amount directly to the player's collection on quest completion.
  • The tutorial quest "Discover 10 unique species" awards 5× Comet Moth (species 62)
This is the second acquisition path for the Comet Moth in addition to the Evolution Tracking 50-point research milestone.

Research milestones (4th path)

Five "Special Research" species (61–65) are awarded via the Research System's Evolution Tracking milestones (25/50/75/100 points) and the Grand Master reward (all 5 paths at 100). The Comet Moth also has the tutorial-quest path above; the other four are research-only.

Discovery System (Clickable Spawns)

How spawns work:
  • Each location defines a species pool (a dict of species_id to weight).
  • When you enter the location, the system rolls one species weighted by these numbers.
  • The selected species stays fixed until collected. After collecting, another becomes available when that location's respawn day is reached.
  • Caterpillars only render during their location's time window (some are 24-hour, some are daylight only).
  • After clicking, the location enters a respawn cooldown measured in days. Common locations respawn faster (2–3 days), epic/rare locations slower (5–10 days).
  • The clickable sprite is the same generic graphic for every species, just tinted with the location's signature color — so you can't tell what species is there until you click.
Clicking a caterpillar:
  1. Increments your collection count for that species.
  2. Sets the location's respawn timer (next available = current_day + respawn_days).
  3. Opens the Caterpillar Collection Popup showing species image, name, scientific name, rarity, size, growth time, era, description, and a "NEW DISCOVERY!" / "Found Again!" / "Ecosystem Species" banner.
Collection vs. Wild:
  • Caterpillars you click go into your personal collection.
  • Releasing them moves them into the wild ecosystem (tracked per era), where breeding happens.
  • Once released, they leave your collection. You can have a species in collection, in wild, or both.
  • The Habitat screen has an "Add All to Auto Era" button that drops every collected caterpillar into its native era.
Add All routing: every species has a fixed native era. When you press Add All, each collected species is routed to its own era. Medieval-era species always go to Medieval, present-era species always go to Present.
No partial release: the Habitat screen only exposes the Add All button. There's no UI to release a single species, hold some back, or split a species across eras. Add All is all-or-nothing.
Total species: 70 (Moths 1–30, Butterflies 31–60, Special 61–65, Water 66–70).

Habitat Management Screen

Access this by using the Manage Caterpillar Breeding action at Whispering Woods (Medieval) or Whispering Woods Uptown (Present). Both are free, instant, with no relationship gates — always available.
Top banner: shows three population summaries — Present Era total, Medieval Era total, and Combined Ecosystem total.
Three action buttons (top right):
  • Add All (paw icon) — releases every collected caterpillar to its native era
  • Caterpillar Info — opens the detailed population breakdown screen
  • Research — opens the Research Laboratory screen
Live ecosystem display: caterpillars and adults that exist in the wild render as wiggling sprites scattered across the screen. Present-era species appear on the left half, medieval-era on the right half. Caterpillars in the lower half, adults in the upper half. Sprite size scales with the species size field (small=0.7×, medium=1.0×, large=1.4×). Position is deterministic per species — same species always appears in the same spot until populations change.
Close button at bottom center restores the persistent UI when exiting.

Detailed Population Screen

Opened via the Caterpillar Info button. Modal screen showing the full per-species breakdown for the combined ecosystem.
Header stats:
  • Total Population — combined medieval + present
  • Species Count — how many distinct species are alive
  • Birds Fed — running total of caterpillars that failed their survival roll during maturation
  • Wallflowers — running total of adults that failed their mating roll
Per-species rows show: species name, era (Present/Medieval), total population, adult count labeled by category (Moths / Butterflies / Special Moths / Aquatic Moths / Aquatic Butterflies), plus two clickable icons for caterpillar popup and adult popup.
The "Aquatic Moths" label is used for water species 68 and 70 (both have moth-style adults). 66, 67, 69 use the "Aquatic Butterflies" label.
Backup System (right side panel): shows a backup snapshot with a "Restore Backup" button. When the system is active, displays Backup Total, Backup Species count, and Total Research points. When inactive, fields show "TBA" and the restore button is greyed out. The backup system is a safety net for save corruption, not a player-facing save tool.
Important — 50/50 fake split for abstracted populations: when a species has been moved to abstracted tracking (1,000+ population), the system no longer tracks individuals. The population breakdown screen displays abstracted species as a fake 50/50 split between caterpillars and adults purely for display. The real backend stores a single total count.

Breeding Lifecycle

The ecosystem updates once per in-game day. Collection specimens do not breed: first release them with Add All. Living totals combine caterpillars, adults and large populations in both eras.

Small populations: maturation and breeding

  1. Caterpillars mature at their species' growth time (see the catalog), measured from the group's birth day. Base maturation survival is 70%, improved by Species Research and, in the Present, Medieval synergy.
  2. Surviving adults reach their breeding day four days after maturation. Generation 1 adults are all eligible; later generations have floor(adult count × 0.5) eligible breeders. Eligibility is not mating success.
  3. Eligible breeders roll against 50% base mating success. Successful breeders produce 50–100 babies each before research. The babies then roll against 10% base survival. Research and Present-era synergy can improve these rates.
  4. Adults breed on that one exact age-four day, not every day. The highest Medieval synergy tier can give a successful Present-era breeder a second batch on the same day.
  5. Adult groups are removed when their age exceeds the effective lifespan: seven days before research/synergy. This is independent of the species' caterpillar growth time.
At counts of 1,000 or fewer, survival is rolled individually; larger groups use rounded expected survival. A single collected caterpillar may fail to mature or mate. The often-quoted “5–10 babies” is the approximate result conditional on successful mating, not a guaranteed return from every specimen; baby survival is random too.
Example: release a growth-eight species on Day 10. It can mature on Day 18, breed on Day 22, and its surviving babies begin their own growth then. With the base seven-day adult lifespan, that adult group is removed on Day 26, when adult age reaches eight. Research/synergy can change survival and lifespan, so this is a timing example rather than a promised population increase.
Fresh collection specimens are added to an existing caterpillar group for that species if one exists; they do not necessarily start a separate new cohort. Once a species is tracked as a large population, new releases add directly to that population instead.

Large populations: the 1,000-per-species threshold

At 1,000 living members of one species in one era, that species switches from age groups to a population total. The threshold is not the combined ecosystem total. Its mature/caterpillar split in the information display becomes an estimate rather than a count of age-tracked individuals.
Large populations grow once daily using:
new population = min(99,000,000, floor(population × (1 + 0.5 × mating rate × average babies × baby survival / 1000)))
Here the mating rate includes Breeding Research and the Present's Medieval mating bonus. Average babies is the midpoint of 50 to (100 + Population Analysis). Baby survival is 0.10 + Environmental Research × 0.002.
Research / era bonuses Daily increase before rounding
No research or synergy 0.1875%
Breeding, Population and Environmental all at 100; no synergy 1.125%
Those research paths at 100; Present with Medieval population 100,000+ 1.8%
Species growth time, larval survival, adult lifespan and the second-batch bonus do not enter this large-population formula. Species and Evolution research remain useful for age-tracked groups and Evolution's rewards, but they do not accelerate an already consolidated population.
The cap is 99 million per species per era, not per ecosystem. Multiple species can therefore exceed the 100-million and billion combined milestones. Once consolidated, a species does not run through a new age-four breeding cycle every day.

Research System

Open Research from the Habitat screen. Each of the five paths caps at 100. A session costs 120 minutes, 30 Energy and 30 Calm; you need both resources available.
points = min(20, (5 + floor(modified Intelligence / 8)) × skill multiplier)
The multiplier is 2 with Researching, otherwise 1. Remaining points to the path's 100 cap can reduce the final gain. Intelligence 40 with Researching already reaches 20/session, so a fresh path takes five sessions, ten hours and 150 of each resource at that rate. There is no requirement to wait for a population milestone before beginning research.
Path Effect at 100 Applies to consolidated population growth?
Species Research Maturation survival 70% → 80% before synergy No
Breeding Research Mating success 50% → 60% before synergy Yes
Population Analysis Baby maximum 100 → 200; minimum stays 50 Yes
Evolution Tracking Adult lifespan 7 → 17 days before synergy; special species rewards No
Environmental Research Baby survival 10% → 30% Yes
The Population path changes the average batch from 75 to 125, a 1⅔× increase at full research; doubling the maximum does not double the average. Environmental research triples the base baby survival at full progress. For established large populations, Environmental, Population and Breeding are the paths that affect the daily growth formula.

Evolution and completion species

Requirement Species Specimens
Evolution 25 61: Madagascar Sunset Moth 5
Evolution 50 62: Comet Moth 5
Evolution 75 63: Vampire Moth 5
Evolution 100 64: White Witch Moth 5
All five paths at 100 65: Chronos Moth 5
Milestones check whether progress has reached or passed the threshold, rather than requiring an exact score. Rewards enter the collection: use Add All to include them in the ecosystem. The tutorial quest Discover 10 unique species is an additional source of five Comet Moths. Researching changes point gains, not the specimen count.
The laboratory shows research progress, survival rates, lifespan, both era totals and the current synergy tier. Use the large-population formula above when estimating long-term growth; the screen's small-population biology values are not all factors in consolidated growth.

Medieval Mystical Bonuses

The Medieval living total boosts Present-era age-tracked breeding. It does not boost Medieval breeding itself. Apply the multipliers after adding research improvements; maturation survival and mating success cannot exceed 100%.
Medieval population Maturation survival Adult lifespan Mating success Second baby batch
0–999 1.00× 1.00× 1.00× None
1,000–9,999 1.10× 1.10× 1.10× None
10,000–49,999 1.10× 1.20× 1.10× None
50,000–99,999 1.20× 1.50× 1.30× None
100,000+ 1.33× 2.00× 1.60× 10% chance per successful breeder
Adult lifespan is rounded down after its multiplier. At full Evolution and the highest tier, the effective Present lifespan is 34 days. A second batch uses the same researched baby range as the first, and both pass through baby survival.
For consolidated Present populations, only this table's mating multiplier affects daily percentage growth. Its survival, lifespan and second-batch benefits apply to detailed age groups. Building a Medieval foundation still improves Present growth, but it does not make the daily large-population rate equal to a full breeding batch.

Population Rewards

Population gates use the combined living total, not specimens held in collection. Visit the listed woods after reaching each threshold to receive its automatic one-time plot. If several become eligible together, revisit until the outstanding scenes have played.
Combined population Visit Reward
500,000 Either Whispering Woods 1 Crystal; +5 Seraph and +5 Lillian
1,000,000 Marina at the Fishing Hut, Acknowledged+ Caterpillar Bait action: unlimited bait and permanent fishing ring bonuses
5,000,000 Either Whispering Woods 3 Crystals; +5 Seraph and +5 Lillian
10,000,000 Medieval Whispering Woods Silken Moth Cloth maid item
15,000,000 Medieval Whispering Woods Silk Uniform worker item
100,000,000 Either Whispering Woods 5 Crystals; +5 Seraph and +5 Lillian
The Crystal awards total nine across the three population plots. The 10M and 15M rewards are equipment items, separate from ordinary collected silk fabric.

The billion-population follow-up

The Moth Lady's Gratitude is a further automatic Present Whispering Woods scene at 1,000,000,000 combined population. Population alone is insufficient. It also requires:
* Main Story Beat 74 completed.
* Terra's The First Unmeasured Plot and Zodiac's The Necessary Evil Syndicate scene completed.
* The 100M, 10M and 15M population reward plots above completed.
Finish those routes and return to the Present woods. This completion opens the ecosystem's further Future-area content. Its visual and narrative outcome is left for the game; there is no need to guess it from the population counter. See the relevant character and story guides for the other quest prerequisites.

Practical Uses

Silk Collection

The "Collect Moth Silk" resource action uses your combined population to determine fabric tier rewards:
  • 1 – 99 total: 1–2 common, 0 rare, 0 epic
  • 100 – 999: 1–3 common, 0 rare, 0 epic
  • 1,000 – 9,999: 2–4 common, 70% chance for 1–2 rare, 0 epic
  • 10,000 – 99,999: 4–7 common, 1–3 rare, 30% chance for 1 epic
  • 100,000 – 999,999: 6–10 common, 2–5 rare, 60% chance for 1–2 epic
  • 1,000,000 – 9,999,999: 12–18 common, 4–8 rare, 1–3 epic
  • 10,000,000+: 20–30 common, 8–12 rare, 3–5 epic
Perception bonus: A separate roll vs. the player's modified Perception stat grants 1 bonus fabric on success — a Rare by default, an Epic if the Luck roll also succeeds.
There is also a 1% chance per resource-collection action to gain +1 Luck.

Fish Bait — Marina's Caterpillar Bait

The "Caterpillar Bait" action is at Marina's Fishing Hut.
Unlock requirements (all must be true):
  • Marina at minimum Acknowledged relationship stage
  • Combined ecosystem population at or above 1,000,000
  • Not already unlocked
  • At Marina's fishing hut, daylight hours
The action is free and instant; population and relationship are eligibility checks, not consumed resources. Once triggered, you bring Marina a sack of caterpillars in a quick plot scene with three response choices (kind +4 / funny +5 / adult +3 Marina relationship). Total relationship gain: 17 base + choice bonus.
Effect (permanent passive once unlocked):
The fishing minigame auto-detects the unlock and applies these buffs to every fishing run:
  • Bait Supply: Unlimited — replaces the consumable bait system entirely
  • Ring spawn rate: -4 frames (faster ring spawning, base 20 frames per ring). Stacks with Master Baiter (-4) and Sashimi's Kiss (-3)
  • Ring rarity shift: common -12%, rare +4%, epic +8% (additive)
There is no "select bait" UI — the bonuses apply automatically once unlocked.

Best epic-hunting routes

  • For Atlas: hit Witch's Hut (15%) and Shopping Mall Exterior (15%) on cooldown. Both have long respawns (10d, 4d) but the highest weights.
  • For Death's-head: Bandit Hideout (50%!) is by far the best, then Ancient Earth Shrine (30%). Both are medieval. Bandit Hideout's 7-day respawn is the trade-off.
  • For Legendary butterflies: Boardwalk (5d respawn) is the best one-stop for 3 of the 4 legendaries (Schaus' 25, Mitchell's Satyr 20, Palos Verdes 20). Butterfly Pavilion (4d respawn) has all 4 plus rare Pipevine but at lower weights. Mansion Exterior at evening hours is the dedicated Karner Blue location (35%).
  • For Lime/Poplar Hawkmoths: Brothel Garden is the only spawn location — exclusive to brothel-owning players. Each species has a 50% chance per spawn.

Progression by Milestone

This is a long-term ecosystem. Calendar-day promises are unreliable because early survival is random, species have different growth times, and 1,000-per-species populations switch to slower daily percentage growth.
  1. Discover and release: collect from maps you can access, visit either Whispering Woods and press Add All. Start both native-era populations; specimens in collection do not grow.
  2. Research early: learn Researching if available, then use modified Intelligence to improve session efficiency. Environmental, Population and Breeding improve offspring and established-population growth; Evolution also supplies special species.
  3. Widen biodiversity: use map cooldowns and hiking to build multiple species. Multiple established populations grow in parallel and each has its own 99M cap.
  4. Build the Medieval foundation: its 1K, 10K, 50K and 100K tiers progressively help the Present. Watch the era-specific total rather than the combined counter for these bonuses.
  5. Claim practical milestones: visit the woods at 500K; use Marina's free Caterpillar Bait at 1M and Acknowledged+; revisit at 5M, and use the Medieval woods specifically at 10M and 15M.
  6. Complete research and larger goals: release the special research rewards, continue growing diverse populations, and claim the 100M plot. The billion follow-up requires its other story/character completions too.
Do not plan on a guaranteed 5–10× increase every twelve days or a guaranteed 500K by Day 60. Check actual living totals after daily updates and use the correct formula for each species' tracking stage.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Collection and hiking

* Clickable spawns are free, but each location has its own 2–10-day cooldown and inclusive hour window. A room's locked access can still prevent ordinary collection there.
* Hike Mountains: Present Mountains Uptown, base 100 minutes and 75 Energy, +1 Stamina. Climb Mountain: Medieval Mountain Foothills, base 130 minutes and 85 Energy, +1 Stamina. Neither has a configured daily limit.
* Hiking uniformly chooses from all species in location pools whose keys begin with the current era's prefix. You do not need to have visited or unlocked every contributing location. The species' native era can differ from the era where it is found; Add All still routes by the native era.
* There are 46 Present hiking candidates and 24 Medieval candidates: each candidate has a 1/46 or 1/24 chance per relevant hike. Research-only species 61–65 and the unprefixed Brothel Garden's 20/22 are absent from both hiking pools.
* Lime and Poplar Hawkmoths therefore still require ordinary Brothel Garden collection. Its two-species pool gives each a 50% chance. Water species 66–70 have their ordinary spawn at Waterfall Uptown and are also possible through Present hiking.

Population and research

* The collection grew, but the ecosystem did not: release it with Add All. The button releases all held specimens to their native eras; the screen has no partial-release selector.
* A new adult did not produce offspring: maturation survival, eligibility, mating and baby survival are separate checks. Later generations have only half their adults eligible, rounded down; a single later-generation adult can have no eligible breeder.
* Growth slowed near 1,000 of a species: it changed to daily percentage growth. This is expected. Use the large-population rates above instead of projecting repeated full batches.
* Research appears capped: each path ends at 100 and sessions award at most 20. Intelligence 40 plus Researching already reaches that session cap.
* A special species is missing from the ecosystem: Evolution/Grand Master rewards enter the collection first. Check there, then Add All.
* A population reward has not appeared: reach its combined living total and visit the correct era's woods. For the billion scene, check all its separate completion requirements.

Silk and fishing

Collect Moth Silk is available at both woods, with base 70 minutes, 20 Energy and 20 Calm. Its fabric tier uses the whole living ecosystem, including butterfly populations, not only species called moths. Use the reward table above under Practical Uses.
Marina's Caterpillar Bait checks population as a prerequisite; it does not subtract a million specimens. It is a permanent upgrade, with no bait-selection toggle. Return during her 04:00–17:00 hut duty for the action; Tobbin's around-the-clock public fishing services do not replace her personal upgrade scene.

Backup and restoration

The ecosystem backup becomes active after a daily update with more than 1,000 combined population and some research progress. Subsequent daily validation can restore the last good snapshot if population drops by at least 500 or research decreases, and otherwise refreshes the backup when the data is valid.
The Habitat screen's manual Restore Backup uses that stored snapshot. It restores ecosystem populations, research, collection and discovery cooldown data; it is not a way to reroll only one unsuccessful mating. The button is useful when the displayed ecosystem needs restoration, and can return those records to their earlier snapshot values.
